State Science Assessment Information

  • Date Established: The Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) was first established in 2016. ISBE entered into an item-sharing agreement with the Office of the State Superintendent in the District of Columbia.
  • Grades Tested: 5, 8, and High School Biology
  • Time of Year: May
  • Type of Assessment: The test is online with each grade taking one session. The sessions contain reading passages (scenarios), followed by questions (i.e., open ended, multiple choice, and some computer interactive). All items are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. Grades 5 and 8 include items from Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering. High school is comprised of items from Life Science and Engineering.
